My Mom is the quilter. For the last twenty years my mom has been planning on taking me to the Houston Quilt Show. But when we got close, something else would come up. Well yesterday we finally made it there. Julia and Grace came along. Julia of course behaved herself and Grace was teething. Bless her heart so she ended up sling riding me and scratching my chest and leaning as far over as she could to hug and kiss Julia. And where was my memory card for my camera, yep thats right, in the computer at home. I was devestated. Me and my mom really dont have that many things we do together. She doesnt celebrate many holidays due to her relegion. So social functions are pretty important. And after lurking on a few blogs this week of women whose mothers have passed on I realized how important those times are. So I was pretty bummed that there was no evidence of this event in my life with my mother.
Ok, <sniff, sniff> Yall know its not like me to act silly about leaving a camera. So let me share with you the photos in my mind. It was a lovely day. One I won't forget. When I got to my moms her and her two sisters were there. We sat on the back patio at moms table laughing and cutting up mostly telling stories about silly things children did. That is the theme of most of our conversations. My grandma, Nana heard us and had to come out to see all us girls. Grace was exstatic to see Nana's wheelchair. She just turned 79 this year. Her hair looked so pretty and she sat there holding Grace in a light blue nightgown. Grace sat in her lap for the longest time. Nana told Julia about how when Julia was a baby she was such a special baby to her since she had been the first great grandchild. It was sweet.
My mom took us all over to her quilt shop and we cut up with those ladies. Good group of women, they advised us to get lunch before going to the show. So we went to Tortuga's. Baha Tacos people. YUM! At the end of the meal Julia watched Grace at the playground for a while and then my aunt watched her. When I passed I saw my aunt holding Grace in her lap, they were looking out towards the pond both just so still for a moment.
We finally did make it to the Quilt Show. And it was awesome. There was so much to look at it would have taken three or four days to have seen it all. The show quilts were spectacular. The vendors very helpful and sweet. It was neat just to be around so many happy people. Lets face there were very few people who didnt want to be there. I bought a nice apron for myself. And my mom bought me some stitch holders! HA! She really did. There was a store there from Houston that set out a booth, Nancy Knits (which I didnt even know existed). Anyway I got to squish some Cherry Tree Hill Merino in a Java colorway. She had a shawl in it and so it goes I have something new to do in the never ending list of "projects I must do". There are two quilts that I also MUST make. But one I must keep secret and the other I will tell you about when I finish the baby quilt I am working on.
I think my personal color tastes are starting to tone down a bit.
